Effects of Ovariectomy and Estrogen Replacement on Rat Tongue Mucosa

چکیده
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible effect of sex steroid deficiency on the rat tongue mucosa as well as the effect of its replacement. Methods: We chose 21 sexually virgin female Wistar albino rats in this study. We divided the model rats into 3 groups: Group-1:Control, Group-2: Sham-operated (bilaterally ovariectomized), and Group-3: Sham-operated, in addition we gave estrogen to Group-3. The tongue mucosa of ovariectomized rats was compared to that of control rats histologically. The same evaluation was also performed after hormone replacement therapy for the ovariectomized rats (Group-2,3). Results: We found that, the ovariectomized animals presented reduced thickness of the tongue epithelium with an irregular keratinized surface. The tongue epithelium thickness was increased after hormone replacement therapy. Conclusions: The findings demonstrate that in the rat, ovarian estrogens play an important role, and its deficiency possibly leads to the onset of tongue discomfort in ovariectomized rats.

Estrogen potentiates vasopressin-induced contraction of female rat aorta by enhancing cyclooxygenase-2 and thromboxane function.
To determine the roles of estrogen and constrictor prostanoids in vasopressin (VP)-induced contraction of female rat aorta, vascular reactivity to VP was determined in thoracic aortas of intact, ovariectomized, and ovariectomized + estrogen-replaced female rats in the presence of indomethacin (Indo), NS-398, SQ-29,548, or vehicle control. The effects of estrogen on vascular reactivity to the th...

In this study, the effects of Urtica dioica hydro-alcoholic extract were investigated on the blood glucose and lipid profiles of female ovariectomized and non-ovariectomized rats. In total, 32 adult female rats were divided into four groups (eight each) including control and ovariectomy groups as well as non-ovariectomy and ovariectomy groups treated with 200 mg kg-1 of ...

Background: Methamphetamine (METH) is one of the most popular psychostimulants which produce long lasting learning and memory impairment. Previous studies have indicated that estrogen and progesterone replacement therapy attenuate cognitive impairment against a wide array of neurodegenerative diseases. Present study was designed to figure out the effects of estrogen, progesterone alone or in co...
متن کاملEstrogen replacement reverses ovariectomy-induced vaginal hyperalgesia in the rat.
OBJECTIVES The loss of ovarian function in women through aging or oophorectomy is often associated with the development of vaginal hyperalgesia that can be alleviated with estrogen replacement. This study examined if ovariectomy in rats would similarly give rise to vaginal hyperalgesia, and, if so, whether estrogen replacement would alleviate it. METHODS Female rats were trained to perform an...
متن کاملEstrogen and tamoxifen modulate cerebrovascular tone in ovariectomized female rats.
Postmenopausal estrogen deficiency increases the incidence of cerebrovascular disease. However, hormone replacement therapy is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator with estrogenic effects on cardiovascular risk factors, but its long-term impacts on cerebral vasculature are unknown. We hypothesized that chronic 17beta-estradiol or...
